“It was my most life-changing experience yet,” states Andrew Ausley, after his recent return to Niceville, having spent 8 weeks as a summer intern In Mexico City with OMS International. OMSI is a mission-sending agency ministering in 42 nations. It is an interdenominational, faith-based mission specializing in evangelism, church planting, and theological education. Andrew, a senior at Georgia Tech studying computer engineering, turned down a tempting engineering internship in Atlanta to “…do something big with God and have God do something big with me.”
“I wanted to have more than a drive-by experience with missions,” states Andrew, and he did.
“Wanting to serve the Lord, brush up on his Spanish and experience a new culture, Andrew headed to the largest city in the world, some 30 million people, and accomplished all three goals. The job as an intern was to rotate through all the facets of the OMSI mission work that is occurring in Mexico City. Andrew taught English classes as a means to attract people to the local house churches, he did door-to-door evangelism, sharing the message of Jesus’ salvation for all people, and he participated in ministry to street kids who live in the city’s underground sewers. He saw the OMS work at the Biblical Seminary which trains pastors, and had the opportunity to work alongside other interns and missionaries from Ireland, Britain, Canada and the USA.
Now, Andrew heads back to Georgia Tech to finish his last semester and then head into his Masters Degree program there. But, he continues to reflect on the haunting question which was asked most often of him while in Mexico….of friends, of acquaintances, even of strangers: “ When are you going to return?”
The answer? “I hope to return over my Christmas break!”
